You can only reach the little cove where San Fruttuoso abbey was built by boat, or by a steep footpath. Coming from the sea, you round the foot of a tall a promontory, and there, in the midst of the Mediterranean blue, appears a white pebbly beach with a graceful stone medieval abbey set tidily at the back of a deep green bay.
It's an amazing sight, and an amazing place - even amidst the storm, we could sense why a handful of monks in the tenth century chose this secluded spot to build their retreat: a perfect place to find peace and harmony amid nature's vastness.
