I was strolling around at a flea market one day, when this tall turquoise glass caught my eye. I love glass, and the color and the imperfections of this particular glass were really striking. I asked the stall-keeper about it, and he said it was a Roman glass. When I heard this, I gave him the asking price without any haggling or laughing: maybe 5 Euros is a lot by flea market standards, but hey, it's a real bargain for an ancient artifact. Above all, this guy deserved a reward for his entrepreneurial spirit - I just loved how he topped all the dubious claims of the pseudo-vintage items all around him, and traced his wares straight back to the Romans!
My Roman glass seemed perfect for one of these wild lilies, which I found growing in an olive grove near our house. This was the first year I'd seen them, though who knows how many years they've flowered in this season. Since Roman times, perhaps?
