I love glasses. I think that a nice glass makes the everyday act of drinking more special. I tend to buy only one glass of a kind, when I find something unusual or memorable, or even a little quirky, so our glasses are mostly mismatched. In the last few years I've developed a passion for engraved glasses in particular: they make even a simple drink of water a special pleasure.
When I decided to make shell necklaces for my shop, I borrowed a dremel tool from a friend. As I drilled the shells to string them, I fell in love with that tool, and began studying the contents of the magic box it came in, with the same concentrated devotion that my boys show with their fishing tackle and tennis gear. And this week, as I was stripping and sorting my dried herbs, most of which I'll soon be distributing to our friends and family, I had an inspiration: I had several small jars which would be perfect for holding my dry herbs, and which would provide the perfect excuse for me to try engraving glass.
Lacking a workspace of my own, I took the electricity outside with me, using an extension cord, and set up a little atelier for my glass engraving experiment (breathing glass powder can be quite harmful due to its silica content, and a mask is essential). I was all ready to start, but then, at the last minute, I decided to wait until the weekend, because ...
... sometimes I like to play with my toys all by myself!
I always look forward to the weekend, but I simply can't wait for this one to come. Wouldn't it be nice if we could learn a new skill every weekend? Hope you have some great plans lined up for your weekend, too!
