Where the lush green mountains meet the blue Mediterranean, there is our beach. It's a long thin strip of sand, flanked by mountains where agriculture land was scarce, mountains that made a rocky barrier, shutting off the rest of the world. It was at sea that people found ways to communicate and to live: our beach was a workplace, where boats came in with the bounty of the sea and goods from faraway shores.
It was one of the poorest regions of Italy, until tourists started coming in crowds, and the fisherman became hoteliers and restaurateurs. But fishing the traditional way, with nets in small wooden boats, is still the main occupation for many, and early each morning the beaches once again become their workplace, as they unload their catch, work on their boats, and mend their nets in the company of the seagulls, as they have for centuries.
PS No photos of my children ... it was difficult, but I did it!
